Hrmmm… at a (strong) guess, PieFed does. You can follow anything, like a community, post, comment (even ones you do not own), or a user account. You would get Notifications triggered every time they post something, I believe. Including comments as well as posts, but again just a guess.

It’s a great way to follow a low-volume something or other! At higher volumes… it can get a bit much, but at least the tools are available, and you can always wipe all Notifications at once if need be.

John Oliver fans are the perfect candidates to join the fediverse, hopefully some of them find their way to Lemmy.

“Moderate” no, “Influence” yes. I see what you seemed to be trying to say: the Lemmy codebase is fairly authoritian e.g. lacks any way to contact a mod to find out why something was removed, even going so far as to obscure the name of the account that did it, simply saying “mod”.

So them being the ones who provide the codebase definitely “influences” us here, but on the other hand they provide the code for free, and anyone at all could make a fork off from it, and administer their own instance however they see fit. Or, as K/Mbin, PieFed, and Sublinks have all done, make their own Reddit replacement Threadiverse software entirely from scratch.

See e.g. !fediverselore@lemmy.ca (here’s a start to a post) that proves that people on the Fediverse are allowed to criticize the main Lemmy developers, while still using Lemmy software.

On a personal note I will add: we can respect certain aspects of those people, even as we criticize other aspects, just as we do the same internally inside of our very selves.

The underlying problem is that Lemmy only offers Subscribed vs. All, and the former starts off entirely empty while the latter is… EVERYTHING.

PieFed solves this by a wizard that guides a new user to pick what their interests are and thereby subscribes them to many communities based on those. On top of that, Categories of Communities allow seeing any content that you choose - e.g. if 9/10ths of the time you want to avoid politics so you subscribe to none, but then that 1/10th you actually do want it… it’s there for you. Instantly. And then goes away again just as quickly.

Some Lemmy apps do this as well - I don’t know which ones - but base Lemmy does not.

So anyway, it’s a UI/UX issue, but fundamentally a bot that at least is properly labeled as such is friendly enough, especially in comparison to all other media platforms where they masquerade as real people to pretend like there’s more engagement than there actually is, and thereby boost advertising income.

They did contact the original owner - who promised (reputedly) to take care of it. Then disappeared (yet again, after repeatedly having done so in the past so many times before). It’s even possible that they did this out of some kind of spite? But perhaps not, maybe it’s merely irresponsibility, and even that due to ADHD or some such, who knows (I did not read through every comment, just enough to know this much).

It is not merely users going rouge (edit: no you know what, fuck it, I’m leaving this spelling exactly as it is, bc it’s 2025 baby! and this apparently is how we roll now) there are posts (not merely moderator reports, which don’t federate particularly with their older software) where they are made aware, and the admins chose to ignore the situation each time rather than ban the person involved. They actively shielded them from consequences, rather than merely allowing them to do whatever. Thus necessitating others to take steps of their own to deal with matters.

Seeing how “responsible” they are, nobody believes the red scare issue - especially people who are ACTUALLY leftist as opposed to whatever fucked up thing tankies are to begin with, and then like that squared (three times over) and possibly reversed and shifted further into the imaginary dimension, to describe whatever the heck Hexbear has going on specifically. Regardless of political views. imho at least, ofc:-).

Except they already said that the same issue will occur with the backup name as well. Unless the additional time allows the original owner to finally reregister it this time, as they (reportedly) claimed to be ready to do for the main one as well. I think they don’t trust them anymore:-).

Is it weird that I feel bad for them? Whoever is to blame, a lot of the users are innocent of this. And are also trolls, true, but even so… It would be nice if some people would learn from this that online trolling is one thing, but eventually it’s even better to wake up and live in the real world. I want that for them.

Your post is visible from lemmy.world (here) but it says it was 2 hours ago (probably bc you edited it), yet it appears sandwiched between posts that say 22 hrs and one day ago. I don’t know how to figure out when it came in.

Usually a delay of a day in federation like that is deadly to a post’s visibility bc when it does come in, it slots in to the original post time rather than the receipt, i.e. it doesn’t show up well when sorting by “New”, and ofc people haven’t seen it yet so it also doesn’t show up in Hot or Top or Active either.

This one looks a lost cause, probably bc of federation issues.

I mean, PieFed has some really cool thoughts about doing exactly that… I’m hoping for a lot there.

As it is, Lemmy is simply a more authoritarian version of Reddit - at the low level I mean, next to the users, who e.g. have no modmail recourse to discuss anything, nor even receive a notification that their content has been removed. Even while it is also open source so allows instance admins greater freedom to implement whatever policies they choose - disabling downvotes for example.

Anyway the more the technology can do the less reliance upon human efforts to moderate. e.g. to facilitate automated community discovery, so that there is lowered barriers to getting away from bad moderators.

I guess I am a snowflake too then, bc to me consent should matter. And while the USA is a part of the world, and also has an oversized effect upon it due to the size of the economy and trade deals and the like, it also can be overwhelming for some, who feel ostracized and left out as if only the big guys (and guns) matter.

But on the other hand, it is known that moderation sucks across the vast majority of Lemmy - it’s somewhat baked right into the tools themselves, e.g. removing whole posts rather than merely taking them out of the community lists but allowing people to continue their discussions already begun, as Reddit does.

So you may want to take it upon yourself to either start blocking by keywords (maybe find an app that allows that - I’m not sure which ones), or user accounts that do that, or even find a better community to engage with.

Though I agree with your conclusion: I no longer recommend Lemmy to people irl by virtue of having been burned by that far too many times before. We’re toxic AF in this Alt-Left (rather than Alt-Right) “Nazi bar” space, and a lot of the people here are legit those banned from Reddit for exactly that behavior.

People like looking at photos of food and cats more than being railed for having "incorrect* political viewpoints? (/s for anyone not picking up on that btw:-P)
