I haven’t used Mastodon, but if it’s anything like Lemmy, most people won’t want to bother learning what an instance is or what federation means.
FOSS enthusiasts regularly overestimate how much hassle regular people are willing to put up with to do something, and how much they care about corporations.
They get carried around all day, charged every day, dropped, ports wear out etc. Compared to a computer, they have a hard life, even the most kindly treated ones.
Phones have a hard life compared to a computer, I suspect the number of phones that last four years would be very small, never mind 8.
Who’s the sad sack that downvoted this? When was the last time you dropped your laptop in the sink?
I mean, I saw it happen. You argue with one, and twenty others show up and just flood the thread.
But sure, keep lying to yourself about how your friends are secretly caring people or whatever.
Having seen how Hexbear interacted with other instances, I have zero empathy for them. They were an incredibly nasty group of people towards anyone who thought differently to them.
They also made a habit of “raiding” other instances, and outright flooding any conversation they didn’t agree with with the most vile takes they could come up with, or, failing that, the pig shit Gif.
But yeah, they’re secretly caring people, sure.
BYD are rapidly closing in, both in sales and share price.
I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen of their vehicles.
