If trump tries to take Canada, as he’s threatening…I agree with this. I’d prefer to send him and his regime to prison, taking all their wealth to pay down our debt they’re so concerned about.

Canadian here. Standing arm in arm with you guys, willing to come out to DC to protest. But anyone who posts a map labelled “United States of Canada” is part of the problem. Wildly disrespectful.

We’re a sovereign nation, we’re not your fucking toy. We’re already being threatened, even if this is a joke it’s not okay to normalize this

It’s not just a name. It’s revealing that they would ultimately consider Canada to be nothing but an extension of the USA (but only the good USA, mind you!! Not the BAD, Jesusland Americans, duh). It’s not respecting Canada as its own, independent nation with its own system of governance, its own culture, and its own identity.

Understandable. Also, not pumping money into our economy is probably a better form of protest for a Canadian at the moment.

As a Canadian I wonder if states can even legally secede? If so, might it be better for the seceded states to form a new nation?

I would caution people about thinking that Canada is some sort of problemless utopia (especially if they form the intention of trying to move there merely off of their reddit perception of it). Their housing crisis is one of the worst in the world and wages are way lower than in the US. I’m sure there are some positives but in my anecdotal experience I have multiple Canadian friends who wish they could live and work in the US purely because of the economic situation.

Joining up with an imperfect Canada that has some economic concerns (and what place doesn’t really), is honestly looking better to me at this point than trying to stay in this abusive relationship with the fascist red states who want to turn the clock back about a hundred years

I mean there are economic concerns everywhere but I think a lot of people really do not understand how well we have it economically here in the US compared to other countries.

Yes, exactly. I’m not an economic expert, but Americans have more purchasing power than Canadians along with higher salaries. When people propose that certain states join Canada, they’re only thinking about what’s in it for them rather than acknowledging that it would a) change the Canadian political landscape and b) bring a whole lot of new citizens who are wealthier than Canadians. Again, not an economic expert, but I don’t see how that would be a great thing for Canadians. Depending on which states would get added, it may even make Canadians a cultural minority in their own country. I mean, even the creator of the image didn’t even bother to write “Canada” or to even use the term “provinces”… they went straight for “states.” How would Canada, as it is, be respected if this came to pass?

But like I wrote in my initial comment to this post, this shouldn’t even be up for discussion. Nobody was talking about this until Trump rolled out his insane 51st state threats. Canada does not want to be the 51st state. We should not be normalizing the discussion of redrawing borders at all while Trump repeatedly threatens to annex Canada, Greenland, and Panama.

I grew up in the US and would much rather see it taken back from the anti-American fascists.

            Yes.

It’s a meme that was created following the 2004 election (leading to George W. Bush’s second term) and I’ve been guilty of sharing it myself.

But, it is no more respectful to think of Canada absorbing US states, than to think of Drumpf annexing Canada as a whole.

It is so telling that the creator of this image called it “The United States of Canada,” completely disregarding the fact that Canada has provinces, not states. And why would we even be called the United States/Provinces of Canada in the first place? Why couldn’t we still be Canada?

I’m a Canadian who grew up in the US and I watch this sub so that I can pass helpful info along to my American friends, but I am so sick of seeing this image pop up everywhere. We should not be normalizing the topic of redrawing borders, especially when Trump continues to threaten annexation of sovereign nations.

Take America back. The America that I grew up in, loved, and thought I knew deserves it.

I always see things like this but there’s one huge flaw in that the states aren’t red or blue but different shades of purple depending on things like rural vs urban, etc.

So you’d be essentially condemning cities like Cincinnati and Atlanta which have larger marginalized populations to the whims of a more consolidated conservative country.

On the other end of it you have states like Michigan that have huge conservative followings that shift back and forth and have periods of rough leadership. That doesn’t change if we still allow any kind of State/Province autonomy. (Assuming you can get swing states to even agree to leave)

This isn’t productive and is a toxic mindset.

For every actual bigot you’ve got countless people who probably could do better if they just knew more than their upbringing has shown them

You’ve got so many impoverished people who couldn’t move even if they wanted to.

And ultimately you shouldn’t have to leave your home. The ones who need to go are the ones who created and are capitalizing from this problem.

        Where’s your class consciousness?

Nice points… I’d say the west coast states would leave easily enough. Already rumblings of it where I am in the Pacific North West. If things get crazy enough people might consider moving to areas that better suit their values, like the west coast or north east. With larger populations sharing similar values the prospect of separation could gain real momentum
