There is no zombie nor spider close by, the environment seems intact. So the only possible confusion is this was the deed of a skeleton.
Fall damage from tripping down the stairs?
Starved to death?
Succumbed to poison inflicted by an enemy upstairs he already vanquished?
The upstairs enemy would’ve attacked the player taking this photograph already, so we would know what happened here.
But there are no arrows. Must have been an enderman.
I think endermen cannot teleport onto carpet. Unless the room is three blocks high.
